An Alton man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail following the sexual assault of a woman on her birthday in 2011. 52 year old Lawrence Burnett pleaded guilty in February to criminal sexual assault in exchange for some charges being dropped. The 15 year sentence was the maximum allowed under the law and he could only serve 85-percent of the term.
Burnett assaulted the woman at her home shortly after a confrontation outside her home on 6th Street in Alton where the woman was punched. Alton Police detectives say Burnett was at the scene and offered to help the victim inside her home, where he then assaulted her. She was able to flee the scene and call 911. During a victim's impact statement that was read in court, the victim says she continues to struggle with the memory of the attack, and claims members of Burnett's family have harassed her own family. Burnett apologized in court for the crime.
