The man accused of killing a minister inside his Maryville church remains unfit for trial. Madison County Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli says Terry Sedlacek has not progressed enough to understand the charges against him, and is unable to communicate properly with his attorneys working on his defense. Sedlacek is accused of fatally shooting Pastor Fred Winters inside the Maryville Baptist Church in March 2009.
Two other people inside the church were injured in the shooting while several others subdued Sedlacek until police arrived. He is charged with first degree murder, but remains in custody at the Forensic Unit at the Alton Mental Health Center. Previous medical exams determined Sedlacek is mentally ill, and the judge said in his ruling is it unlikely that his condition will change within a year. Sedlacek's defense is attempting to have him declared not guilty by reason of insanity, which could result in him being held by the state for the rest of his life. Another doctor will interview Sedlacek and another hearing will be held in a few months in which the judge could make a final ruling in the case.
