A South Roxana man now faces up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 after pleading guilty to charges of federal tax evasion and attempting to bribe an official. 52-year old Stephen K. Sweet of the 6900 block of Illinois Route 111, pleaded guilty to tax evasion for reporting a loss of more than $70,000 for the 2005 tax year, a move that resulted in a zero tax debt. He also admitted that he presented officials at Scott Air Force Base with items of value in 2008 and 2009, hoping that they would gain more benefits in the future.
The suit against him also says that he owes the government close to $227,000. Sweet will also be allowed to take a vacation as part of the plea deal, the judge has granted him permission to travel to Africa with his attorney for a 20 day period at the end of July. He will not be sentenced until December.
