A Granite City man was killed Tuesday as he left work from the U.S. Steel plant. 64 year old Gary Hildreth was apparently inside a crosswalk on 20th Street near Nash when he was struck by a passing vehicle around 6:30am. He was taken to a hospital in St. Louis where he died a few hours later.
Police did not originally believe Hildreth was in the crosswalk, but further investigation showed he was crossing the street inside the double white lines. Granite City authorities are trying to determine if the motorist had a green light at the time of the accident, but so far no charges have been filed against the driver. Police say the driver who struck Hildreth did not work at the mill.
