Authorities in Alton are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and an Amtrak train over the weekend. The Madison County Coroner's Office confirms the identity of a man who apparently stepped out in front of the train late Saturday night near the Humbert Road crossing. Killed was 50 year old Lawrence E. Meyer of the 2900 block of Sanford.

The train was traveling toward the Alton station from Chicago when the conductor stated a man appeared out of the woods and into the path of the train giving him no time to slow down or stop. The fatal incident occurred about 360 feet west of Humbert Road just after 10pm Saturday. Alton Police are investigating the case, and recovered the mans motorcycle from the nearby Bowl Haven parking lot. They are also looking into the possibility the act was intentional. No one else was believed to have been with Meyer at the time of his death.
