The Madison County Sheriff's Department has contacted the Illinois State Police to investigate the death of an inmate found dead in the Madison County Jail Saturday evening. 43 year old Freddie Ross of East Alton was convicted last week after pleading guilty to attacking a woman with a baseball bat.  Ross was discovered hanging in the shower area of the jail Saturday evening and was later pronounced dead.

Authorities report Ross was found unresponsive by a jail deputy during a regular check of the inmates in the cell block just after 7pm Saturday. Edwardsville Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene and no signs of life were found on Ross and he was pronounced dead by an investigator with the Madison County Coroner's Office. Ross admitted guilt last week to attacking his then girlfriend with a baseball bat, drugging her and tying her up inside the home they shared last March. She was able to escape and summon help from a neighbor who took her to the hospital. Ross was arrested the next day, and had been in custody until his trial last week.
