Madison County authorities are investigating the apparent drowning of a man who was trying to swim with another man across a pond in rural Troy on Wednesday. 47-year-old Richard A. Brown of Collinsville had reportedly agreed to a challenge from another man to see who could swim across the pond the fastest.
According to police, witnesses say the group of people had been at the home in the 3300 block of Troy O’Fallon Road for several hours when the so-called wager took place. Both men got into the water and began swimming, but at some point Brown went under and never resurfaced. The other man was ahead of him and was able to swim across the pond. Rescue crews from Troy, O’Fallon, Maryville, Swansea and St. Clair County Special Emergency Services responded to the scene just after 3pm yesterday and recovered Brown’s body about two hours later. An autopsy will be conducted.
