A Granite City man has been found guilty of murder during a jury trial in Madison County Court this week. 25 year old Caleb Bailey was found guilty after almost five hours of deliberation yesterday in Edwardsville. Bailey could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Bailey was convicted in the death of 43 year old Travis Mayes two years ago. The Madison County Sheriff's Department discovered the body of Mayes in a parking lot in the 4700 block of Nameoki Road in the early morning hours of May 18, 2014. During the investigation, police discovered that Bailey and Mayes had an ongoing dispute over a female that included an altercation at a bar earlier in the evening of Mayes' death. Police say Mayes left the bar and was followed by Bailey, who shot Mayes in the parking lot. Sentencing is still several weeks away, but Bailey will face from 20-60 years in prison along with a possible additional 25 year sentence for using a gun in the crime. He must serve 100% of the sentence and remains in the Madison County Jail.
