An Alton man has been charged with arson after he allegedly set fire to a vehicle at a residence in the Milton area late last week.  43 year old Kirby D. Schimmels of the 3300 block of East Broadway in Alton was taken into custody after nearby residents, who allegedly witnessed the incident, held him until police arrived.

The Madison County State's Attorney's Office filed the single charge of arson and he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.   Schimmels allegedly poured some type of accelerant on the rear of a vehicle and set it on fire last Thursday night and reportedly told police the person living at the residence owed him money.  According to police, Schimmels was viewed fleeing the area on foot and was confronted and eventually held by several residents on the parking lot of the Messiah Lutheran Church.  The Alton Fire Department also responded to the scene to extinguish the vehicle fire after a few other residents attempted to put it out with a water hose.
