An Alton man has been charged in connection with a shooting late last week. 57 year old Vincent J. Caldwell of the 800 block of Oakwood in Alton is charged in the incident from Friday evening, and preparation for his arrest drew plenty of attention as a police tactical unit stagged on the parking lot of Alton Square Mall last Friday night.

Police then went to his home in the Oakwood Estates Housing Complex late Friday night, but he was not at home. He was later taken into custody early Saturday morning in the 1000 block of Elliott in Alton. Caldwell has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Police say he and a woman got into an argument at her residence in the 700 block of Oakwood last Friday evening, and another man tried to break it up. Caldwell allegedly left the scene but returned and fire shots at the man. No one was injured and Caldwell fled the scene. Several callers to Z-1570 claimed to have seen a large police presence on the parking lot of the mall last Friday night, assuming it was an incident at the shopping center, but authorities say they used the lot for a staging area before heading to Oakwood.
