An Alton man has been taken into custody and charged with one felony count of arson at a place of worship in connection with a 2011 fire at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. The enhanced charge was levied against 31-year old Alan B. Bartholomew of the 1900 block of Brown Street in Alton by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office Wednesday.

Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold is pleased to see an arrest in this case.

Sebold comments

Authorities believe Bartholomew is responsible for October 6th blaze that caused an estimated $1.95-million worth of damage. An investigation by the Alton Fire Department revealed the fire had two points of origin that were between 60 and 75 feet apart. The Alton Police Department, Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office and a private arson investigator hired by the church were also involved in the investigation. Bartholomew is being held on $200,000 bond.
