An East Alton man is facing charges after allegedly defrauding senior citizens while making home repairs. 40 year old Robert Gayan of the 300 block of North Center was arrested this week after authorities say he offered to make roof repairs for $150 but never made the promised repairs. Gayan is facing felony charges in the case because the victims are over the age of 60.
Madison County Sheriff's Department Captain Mike Dixon says the suspect approached the victims in the case allegedly posing as an employee of a company that replaced the roof almost two years ago:
Dixon says Gayan climbed onto the roof of the victims home, but was done in 10 minutes which raised suspicions of the homeowners. The original roofing contractor was called and came out to inspect the work that was done and found either nothing was done, or just a few nails were driven into the vents. Police were called last week to one of the victims homes in Cottage Hills where a complaint was made. Dixon says Gayan never worked for the original contractor as he claimed. He was taken into custody on Monday and is held in lieu of $50,000 bond for aggravated home repair fraud.
