The U.S. Postal Service is investigating the reported dumping of mail by a fill-in postal worker in Alton last month. About 100 Alton residents didn’t get any mail on January 23, with some of it found in a drainage ditch by postal officials. Charges against the worker, who has since resigned, are pending.
The Office of Inspector General is looking into the case and Jeff Arney, Assistant Special Agent in Charge with the office tells The Big Z the former carrier could face federal charges.

Some residents whose mail was not delivered received letters notifying them of the problem along with an apology from the Postal Service. The Alton Fire Department was asked to assist in recovering some 200 pieces of mail in a ditch near Alby and Blair Streets. Other mail was reportedly found in a dumpster.
