If Madison County, Ill., makes national news, we must be talking about its court system.
“Madison County is ranked the fifth worst judicial hellhole in the country,” says Travis Akin, executive director of Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch, “primarily because of the asbestos litigation industry,” adding one courtroom in Illinois hears almost a third of the nation's asbestos litigation.

“If they're hit by a car, or burned in a factory, or poisoned, they shouldn't have a remedy,” John Cooney says of the people Akin represents disdains. “That would make the insurance industry much happier.”
Cooney is immediate past president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and says it's “moronic” and “sad” that tort reform organizations put out “judicial hellhole” lists as if they are humorous.
