A farmer from Hettick in Macoupin County has died after sustaining serious injuries in an accident over the weekend. The Macoupin County Sheriff's Office reports that 66-year old Ronald D. Releford had apparently been on farm property spraying weeds on a hillside Sunday afternoon around 1:00 p.m. when the tractor he was operating overturned. He was found at approximately 11:15 p.m.
This accident serves as a reminder prior to the busy fall harvest season that accidents can happen at any time on the farm. University of Illinois Extension Farm Safety Specialist Bob Aherin says farmers need to be particularly careful about letting kids out in the fields.
Another concern is electrocution, with many types of farm equipment like tractors with front end loaders and portable grain augers having the potential to come into contact with overhead power lines. Each year there about 80,000 farm related injuries across the country, many involving machinery, with arms and legs getting caught in the equipment, and tractors and wagons overturning and crushing farmers.
