Voters in Macoupin County were asked " Shall a retailer’s occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a “Sales Tax”) be imposed in Macoupin at a rate of 1% to be used exclusively for school facility purposes?"  By a 63% to 37% margin, voters said yes.

Jersey, Greene, and Calhoun counties are among the local counties where voters have already passed a similar tax, some dating as far back as 2007.  Items like gasoline, soda, clothing, and prepared food at restaurants would be taxed, while unprepared foods, drugs, farm equipment and motor vehicles would not.
