An aging police car will be replaced with a new one, thanks to a grant the Macoupin County Sheriff's Department was recently awarded. The announcement came as part of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority's Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant Awards for Law Enforcement Vehicles.

The car that is being replaced has over 180,000 miles and is costing more to maintain.  Sheriff Don Albrecht says police vehicles see a lot of wear and tear.

Albrecht comments

Only 24 Illinois communities received the grant out of over 300 applicants statewide. Only 7 of those 24 are county sheriffs departments. The grant will pay for 75% of the purchase cost for the new vehicle- in this case, about $18,600.
