A coal mine in Macoupin County will be closing in the wake of what company officials say are poor market conditions. Numerous sources say Decatur-based Archer Daniels Midland did not renew its contract for next year. ADM is the largest customer of the Crown III mine in Farmersville.
The shutdown is targeted for December 20. Nearly 190 mine workers will be left without a job just before Christmas. Many of those workers are members of the United Mine Workers of America. The mine is the only unionized coal mine in Illinois.
