The annual Elijah P. Lovejoy Week begins Thursday in Alton. Lovejoy has been referred to by some as the first casualty of the Civil War, having been killed on the banks of the Mississippi River in Alton. On three occasions, pro-slavery factions who wanted to stop him from publishing abolitionist views destroyed his printing press.
Trustee Ed Gray tells The Big Z the Lovejoy Week celebrations begin this year with the music festival at 7pm at Lovejoy Elementary School.
