The Elijah P. Lovejoy memorial week begins Friday at Lovejoy Elementary School. The celebration includes several events around the city to remember the abolitionist and free press martyr who was shot by a pro slavery mob in November 1837 while he was guarding his newspaper press.
Trustee with the foundation Ed Gray says the first event will be the annual dinner to be held at Lewis & Clark Community College in "The Gallery."
Tickets are $35, and can be purchased by calling 466-9240, or they can be bought at the door. Gray says this year's dinner is especially exciting, with the addition of a one act play based on the tales of Lovejoy's death, as interpreted by a troupe from Alton Little Theater.
