Lottery scams have been around for years, and scammers have recently been trying to convince residents of Calhoun County they have won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes. The Sheriff's Department has posted a warning about this scam, and the Better Business Bureau has some tips if you are approached by any kind of scam artist.
As with other scams, the scammers say all you have to do to collect your winnings is to send them money for taxes, mailing fees, or some other bogus charge. Better Business Bureau investigator Bill Smith tells The Big Z these criminals can be very convincing.

The sheriff's department says these calls are coming from an 876 area code, which is from Jamaica. You are advised to never wire money or provide personal information, and remember that if you did not enter a contest you cannot be a winner.
