A 40-year-old transient will be allowed to represent himself in court as he faces charges relating to a series of incidents in which he was allegedly seeking children with which to have sex. James Lopes is charged with three counts of Grooming and three counts of Disorderly Conduct. He asked a judge on Friday to have the charges dismissed, but was denied.
Lopes will be examined in an attempt to determine whether he should be deemed a sexually dangerous person. According to charges filed by the Madison County State's Attorney, Lopes "knowingly used a computer on-line service to seduce, solicit, lure, or entice, or to otherwise engage a child's guardian in any unlawful sexual contact with a child" on three occasions in late April. He is being held on a $75,000 bond.
