A homeless man arrested on a Livingston parking lot this spring may be deemed a sexually dangerous person. A trial date has been set to determine if 40-year-old James Lopes will be saddled with the designation. He is accused of acting in a suspicious manner, and saying some "inappropriate things" to children around Madison County.
Lopes is charged with three counts of Grooming, and three misdemeanor counts of Disorderly conduct. Lopes never made contact with the children he was allegedly approaching, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Department. According to charges filed by the Madison County State's Attorney, Lopes "knowingly used a computer on-line service to seduce, solicit, lure, or entice, or to otherwise engage a child's guardian in any unlawful sexual contact with a child" on three occasions in late April. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on December 6.
