Springfield-area historians are looking for any farm houses built before the Civil War and are still being used.
Sangamon County Historic Preservation Commission Chair Chuck Pell says it’s just an effort to tell the county’s rich farm history.
“When it comes to historic preservation, people think of lots of things — within the City of Springfield…whether it’s the Old State Capitol or other things.  Sometimes, those more rural structures get overlooked,” says Pell.  “We really want to highlight them.”
Any owners of historic farm houses will receive a certificate, but the groups hope to give a special award to the owner of the oldest farm house in the county.
“Many of the people who own these have their own significant histories of these structures,” says Pell.  “I don’t think that the verification is going to be that hard.”
Pell says the effort may encourage more farmers to preserve the buildings they own.
