The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates 7-million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Locally, an effort involving the Madison County State's Attorney and Coroner, and members of the drug treatment and counceling communities, will be announced Wednesday at the Madison County Administration Building.
It's called "Lock Your Meds." Among abusers over the age of 12, research shows 70% obtain the drugs from friends and family members. In the Riverbend, Alton Police Chief David Hayes says the Donald E. Sandidge Law Enforcement Center in Alton has a drop box for old medications that is available at any time.
It is estimated more than 4,000 young adults and children have their first experiment with prescription drugs every day.
