Local municipalities and school districts that were told they were overpaid by the state want to see proof. The Illinois Department of Revenue released information this week stating a mistake uncovered the misallocation in property taxes and the overpayment of a total of more than $168-million to nearly every taxing body in the state.

According to the information shared by the state, East Alton was overpaid more than $86,000, while the Alton School District must pay back more than $618,000.
