A new method of trying to shake down victims is being perpetrated by what is believed to be foreign scammers, and it has the potential of putting public safety at risk. The perpetrators will call a business looking for a victim to send them funds. If they do not get a response to their liking, they launch an attack on their phone system, and in some recent cases, the targets have been 9-1-1 call centers.
Madison County 9-1-1 Director Terry McFarland explains how the attack is carried out.
He says if something like that were to happen locally, there are procedures in place to keep the system up and running. He adds that since the 9-1-1 telecommunicators would be the first to recognize such a thing was happening, they would put their back-up procedures into place, and the public likely would not notice any change in service.
