Visiting Cuba may not be on the top of many travel lists, but a local professor was able to fulfill a dream earlier this year and tour the island nation just off the coast of Florida. Professor John Williams is the chair of the Department of Political Science at Principia College in Elsah and says he hopes to return one day.
In order to legally visit Cuba, Americans must be part of an approved tour company and Williams toured with alumni from the George Washington School of Law this past March. He says while there are signs of a loosening of some Communist control as the old guard starts to die off, there is still much poverty and high unemployment. Williams says what is remarkable is the every day Cuban’s ability to go with the flow and enjoy life

Williams says there is a sense in Cuba that change is coming, but fears the country and its people may not be ready for it. He was a guest last week on Let’s Talk on the Big Z and you can hear the full interview by clicking the LISTEN tab at the top of the page and scroll down to the show from August 7.
