A local teacher is one of 10 finalists in this year's 2017 Illinois Teacher of the Year competition. Matthew Herndon teaches physical education to students at Lewis and Clark Junior High School in Wood River-Hartford School District 154. The award is given by the Illinois State Board of Education.
The Illinois Teacher of the Year will be named during the “Those Who Excel” banquet in October. The state’s annual educator recognition program will acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of more than 250 educators and school personnel from throughout the state and honor one individual as the Illinois Teacher of the Year. Herndon is no stranger to awards: he was awarded the 2014 Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Herndon has been the physical education teacher for the 6th through 8th graders at the school for the past 18 years.
