There were a handful of local events to mark Veterans Day on Wednesday.  Two schools in Bethalto held special services, and the annual ceremony at the Alton VFW Post also took place at the doughboy statue.

Several dozen people stood outside at Post 1308 on Alby Street while large American flags lined the roadway.  A gun salute was offered, along with words from Illinois VFW state senior vice commander Dave Stout, Alton Mayor Brant Walker, and keynote speaker Michael "Doc" Holiday of Alton.   In Bethalto, students were in class yesterday to help honor veterans with separate ceremonies at Zion Lutheran Church and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.
