The onetime postmaster of New Salem had a one-of-a-kind birthday Wednesday. It was the first day of issue for a 21-cent stamp featuring Abraham Lincoln. The unveiling took place in the Old State Capitol. There's still room for stamps in 2014.

“You can go to our automated kiosks and have printed exact postage labels,” says Jeffrey Williamson of the U. S. Postal Service, “but the American public still has an affinity for stamps, and it's still an important part of our business.” Williamson is executive vice president and chief human resources officer of USPS. The stamp, he says, is intended for each additional ounce on a first-class letter.
