Thousands of Illinoisans who rely on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to get through tough financial times may have to find another source of help as several counties in the state have stopped taking applications. Madison County stopped taking applications on March 23 citing a lack of available funding as the reason. LIHEAP is a federally funded program, supplemented by the state and administered trough the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The program assisted nearly 6,500 people in Madison County last year and has helped almost 4,800 people this year according to county officials.
