courtesy GFPDFirefighters from four area departments battled an apartment building fire in Godfrey this (Tuesday) morning.  No one was injured, as the building in the Woodbury Apartments on Humbert Road just east of North Alby Street was unoccupied while undergoing renovations from a previous fire last October.

The cause of the fire appears to have been a lightning strike.  Godfrey Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Eric Cranmer tells The Big Z the 9-1-1 call went out just before 10am.

He says a maintenance worker was in the building at the time of the lightning strike, and was able to report it immediately.  Godfrey, Fosterburg, Alton and Brighton firefighters all responded to the mutual aid box alarm.
