Lightning was frequent throughout the night as the storms roared through the region. A fire started in an apartment complex in Granite City due to lightning that struck the roof starting a blaze in the attic.
Both Granite City police and fire departments responded to the fire. The lightning strike fire occurred in the 2000 block of Pontoon Road at around 7:30P.M. Witnesses in the neighborhood say the lightning bolt hit the top of the building causing the chimney to explode. Bricks flew across the street, and shot through a neighbors window. According to Granite City Fire Department Shift Commander Dave Jenkins, smoke started to billow immediately after the lightning struck. He also says the four-family two-story apartment building has too much damage to fix due to the amount of water the firefighters had to use to put out the fire in the attic to keep the flames from re-igniting.
