Scrap theft is part of an ongoing problem that a state representative hopes can be addressed with the introduction of a new bill. Municipalities around the area have passed laws to tighten the noose on those who would deal in illegally obtained metals, but scrap thieves continue to find places to peddle their stolen goods in neighboring communities.
Illinois State Representative Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea) has introduced House Bill 330, creating a task force of experts he says will help devise a wide-ranging plan to combat metal theft.

If signed into law, the task force would include legislators, state and local law enforcement, and representatives from the state’s public utilities, rural electric cooperatives, insurance companies, and scrap metal suppliers.
