One of the delights of fall is the turning colors on our trees. After that, the challenge is how to get rid of them. Some communities around the Riverbend allow you to burn leaves while some, such as Bethalto, Hartford and Roxana, have prohibited the practice. In communities where it is allowed, residents are implored to use common sense.
Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says you should burn your leaves in a container.
He also recommends keeping a water source handy, such as a hose or a bucket, just in case the fire starts to spread beyond the pile. Burning is allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Alton, Godfrey and Wood River.
East Alton allows burning during daylight hours October 1- March 31 between 8:00am and 5:00pm, and the fire must be attended with a water supply on hand and when the wind is light.
(*It was previously reported that East Alton allowed burning at any time, that is incorrect. We apologize for the error*)
