If you are new to the Riverbend, the rules regarding leaf burning vary from town to town. Even longtime residents may need a reminder of what is and is not allowed, and when. Some have banned burning, some allow it part time, and there are still a few that allow you to burn year round.
What was once the accepted way of getting rid of yard waste is now limited to just Wednesdays and Saturdays during the spring and fall in Alton, Godfrey and Wood River. Godfrey Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Lt. Tom Wills tells The Big Z if you are going to burn outdoor waste, use common sense and courtesy.

Bethalto, Hartford and Roxana, have prohibited the practice all together, offering leaf pick-up instead. East Alton allows burning during daylight hours October 1- March 31 between 8:00am and 5:00pm, and the fire must be attended with a water supply on hand and when the wind is light.
