A drive by lawyers to help the hungry has exceeded its goal. “That campaign was tremendously successful,” says John Thies, president of the Illinois State Bar Association, who organized the Lawyers Feeding Illinois initiative. “As a result of the campaign, we have now raised 1.25 million meals that will go for the benefit of the food banks around the state.”

There are eight food banks that serve food pantries around Illinois.
The goal of the campaign was 1 million meals. The lawyers who participated mostly donated money, but they also donated 11,000 pounds of food at collection points at many Illinois courthouses. The effort had contributions from 1,200 lawyers, but many of them were actually bundlers who may have hustled donations from an entire law firm, so Thies says the actual number of lawyers who took part is probably much higher. Thies says the bar association had not intended for this to be an annual event, but they’re working to make it so.
