The surviving son of a Godfrey man who was killed when a car crashed into his home, is suing the driver of the vehicle and a nearby tavern. 73 year old Marlin "Bud" Bushnell was killed in January when an SUV crashed through the front living room of his Saturn Drive home. 24 year old Jacob Fickle of the 200 block of Mercury Drive in Godfrey has been criminally charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Brian Bushnell is the plaintiff in the civil suit against Fickle and the Beer Barrel Pub, claiming Fickle was drinking at the bar just before the crash. The Madison County Sheriff's Department says Fickle got into a fight with a family member at a house a block away on the night of the crash, grabbed their keys and sped off before missing the turn that sent him into Bushnell's home. He fled the scene on foot and was arrested a short time later on the parking lot of the bar. The suit is seeking damages on behalf of the victim's estate and his survivors.
