It's near the end of basketball season, but there are those in the Illinois legislature that have football on the brain. A bill pending in the house requires Illinois school boards to only allow tackling at high school football practices, once per week. The concern is that too much hard hitting contact leads to serious head injuries.
But representative Sandy Pihos of Glen Ellyn says this is a matter that should be left up to the Illinois High School Association.
Opponents also argue that there are many private football programs, especially for younger kids, that wouldn’t be affected by such a law.
