Food banks would get more venison and duck to pass along to the needy under a bill to incentivize donations. U. S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-East Moline) is supporting the Wild Game Donation Act, which would allow hunters to take a tax deduction of the cost of processing wild game they donate. The donations are already going on through such groups as Illinois Sportsmen against Hunger.

“I think it would be most popular,” Bustos says, “with hunters who are out there weekend after weekend during deer season. I happen to have a son who is out there as much as he can be out there. He bags multiple deer every season. He says he likes the idea and will participate in it.” Bustos says one in six Americans is “food insecure.”
