State Representative Dan Beiser is urging everyone to "break the silence" of elder abuse. July is Elder Abse Awareness Month. It’s estimated as many as 100,000 Illinois seniors are victims of abuse, but most cases go unreported. A new law is now on the books in Illinois to help provide another level of safety and security to seniors.
Beiser says this new law requires Illinois State Police officers to be trained to recognize the signs of physical abuse, financial abuse, and neglect of seniors.
Family members, caregivers, and seniors themselves can report suspected cases of abuse to the hotline at 1-866-800-1409 or 1-888-206-1327. After trained professionals receive a report, they direct it to the appropriate police department or service agency for further investigation.
