Foods made by Illinois veterans will soon have a special label. The Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Farm Bureau are launching the Homegrown by Heroes initiative, which will draw some extra attention to agricultural products made by those who have served or are still serving in the military. Kendra Schilling, the department’s local foods liaison, says it’s too soon to tell how many veterans will take part in the program.

“The program in Illinois is very much in its infancy,” Schilling said. “The program actually started in Kentucky, and we’re gonna be the second state to roll it out.” Schilling says the program will also help veterans who want to work in agriculture by connecting them with experienced farmers and farmers’ markets.
