Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump has lost the support of one GOP senator. Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois says he cannot support the nomination of Donald Trump as the GOP nominee following statements Trump made about a federal judge.
Kirk initially said he would support the Republican nominee, but yesterday reversed his decision after Trump spoke about the judge who was presiding over a case involving a lawsuit against Trump University. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel has been assigned to the case, and Trump said the judge could not fairly preside over the case because he wants to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Judge Curiel was born in the United States. Trump has since issued a statement saying his remarks were “misconstrued.” Kirk said he does not believe Trump has the temperament to be the commander in chief. Kirk’s opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Tammy Duckworth, blasted Trump’s comments as racist, and asked why it took Kirk so long to oppose Trump’s past negative comments about women and minorities.
