A coal mine in Macoupin County closed in late December in the wake of what company officials say are poor market conditions.  Decatur-based Archer Daniels Midland did not renew its contract for 2014, so instead of looking for a new client, the operators of the mine shut it down, according to the head of Macoupin Economic Development Partnership.  ADM was the largest customer of the Crown III mine in Farmersville.

Shari Albrecht says about 190 mine workers were left without a job just before Christmas, many of them members of the United Mine Workers of America.

The mine was the only unionized coal mine in Illinois.  There is a job fair today at Lincoln Land Community College in Litchfield from 10am-1pm.  For more information, call 217-854-9644, ext. 240.
