A green housing development on the northern edge of Jerseyville recently received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing.  Lexington Farms is Leadership in Energy and Environment Design, or LEED, Platinum Certified.  That simply means it met baseline benchmarks for green building design, construction and operation.  Thirty-two homes are for rent to families which make less than 60 percent of the area median wage of $41,000.

Combine that with solar and wind power, and the homes are said to be a very economical choice for those who qualify.  Many residents report a big savings on their summer power bills, although the jury is still out on how effective the alternative energy homes react in the winter.  Residents may enter into a rent-to-own program for the homes as soon as the 15-year tax credit compliance is complete.  The houses are about 1,400 square feet, and have 3-bedrooms and 2-car garages.
