Jersey County voters will not have a chance to vote on the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, which would limit the extension taxing bodies can request to five percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.  Neighboring Greene and Macoupin Counties have approved the law, but the Jersey County Board voted 9-3 to kill the idea, at least for now.

Among the groups asking the board to study the measure further were the Greenfield and Southwestern school districts.  The argument is that in the case of an emergency, they couldn't raise the funds to fix the problem.  Supporters of PTELL, such as County Board Member Ron Hennerfouth, says any tax increase should be approved by the people.

Hennerfouth comments

Jeff Ferguson and Ed Koenig voted with Hennerfouth.  There were about 50 people in attendance at the meeting, most in support of PTELL.  Hennerfouth says the issue could come back in the spring, if the makeup of the board is changed ad a result of the fall election.Attempts to contact Jersey County Board Chairman Pam Heitzig for comment were unsuccessful.
