Alton Police say it was in large part due to the public's help that an alleged shooter in an Upper Alton confrontation has been arrested. 19-year-old Marco D. Toney, of the 1600 block of Greenwood allegedly shot another man in the leg while at Jim's Corner at the corner of College and Washington Avenue on January 5. That person's injuries were not life-threatening.
According to information provided by the Alton Police, an off duty detective spotted Toney (pictured) walking in Upper Alton on Friday, and notified the police department. Once an officer arrived on the scene, Toney ran, but an observant neighbor pointed the officer in Toney's direction. He was taken into custody in the 2,100 block of Washington Avenue. Toney is charged with Aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The shooting is believed to be due to an ongoing dispute between two groups of young men.
