A man being held in the Macoupin County Jail in Carlinville has died.   45 year old William Curtis Smith of Virden was reportedly found unresponsive inside his jail cell on Monday morning and personnel began life saving measures while an ambulance was en route.  Smith died a short time later at Carlinville Area Hospital.

A news release from the Macoupin County Sheriff's Department says Smith was brought to the jail Sunday evening by Virden Police.  Authorities say Smith was arrested on a failure to appear warrant and was being held so he could appear before a judge.   Jail personnel found him unresponsive in his cell just after 7am Monday and he was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 8am.  An autopsy was conducted at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield and results of several medical tests are pending.  The Illinois State Police has been requested to conduct an investigation into Smith's death.
