With the recent deluge of rain the Illinois State Police are offering a number of tips to help keep motorists safe on wet roadways. Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. tells The Big Z you are required by state law to turn your headlights on whenever weather forces you to use your windshield wipers.

He says safe travel in any weather, especially rain, starts with checking equipment and maintaining a safe speed.

Other tips being offered include adjusting your travel schedule to account for the weather, increasing your following distance, and avoiding the temptation to drive through deep or rushing water that is covering a roadway. Dye says if you have to stop and think about it, you probably shouldn’t attempt to drive over a water covered road.
